MIT MEDIA LAB’s new logo
by Shane Greeves on Mar 22, 2011
It’s always a challenge to break the norm and be original. There are many formula’s to logo creation – you often see adaptions to these formula’s. So, it great when you see a fresh new approach that breaks new ground. The idea around one logo is challenged!
TheGreenEyl, E Roon Kang and Richard The came together to develop the Algorithmic logo using processing (founded by Ben Fry and Casey Reas in 2001 while at the MIT Media Lab) in an effort to capture the dynamism and diversity of the MIT Media Lab. The main concept is the idea of the intersection, each of the cones representing one individual coming to the lab. The algorithm is a processing application that generates the individual logos. The team used it to generate 40.000 logos in 12 color combinations. Each of the three shapes stands for one individual’s contribution, the resulting shape represents the outcome of this process: A constant redefinition of what media and technology means today. This ‘community’ approach allows everyone who works at MIT to choose what combination they want.
It would be great to see what Mondrian would think?
